Inject Your Own Style Into A Rental Property

With house prices rising more people are starting to rent for longer periods. When you’re renting a house, it can be difficult to feel like it’s really your home. It’s just like living in somebody else’s house on a temporary basis. But if you decorate and furnish it right, you can make it your own. If you plan on renting for a while, making the house feel like your own permanent home is important. If you’re feeling out of place in your rental property, try these tips to put your own stamp on it.

Get An Unfurnished Property

People often think that renting a furnished property is best because it’s a lot easier. You don’t have to deal with getting all of that furniture in at short notice but the downside is that you don’t get any choice about what goes in your house. Having somebody else decorate your house for you makes it difficult for you to ever feel completely at ease there. Getting an empty house is like a blank canvas that you can paint in any way that you like. You can easily get a great mattress next day so you’ll have a bed there at least, and you can do without the rest of the stuff for a week or so while you get everything sorted. You’ll have the flexibility to create your own colour palettes and choose the exact furnishings that you want in the house. Most landlords will decorate the house in a very neutral colour scheme so they don’t put off potential tenants. That means that if you get a fully furnished house, it’s likely to be pretty dull.

Art

Some landlords won’t let you completely redecorate but that doesn’t mean that you can inject a bit of your own personal style into the place, you’ll just have to be more creative. Hanging large pieces of art on the walls is the best way to turn those walls into something that you love without having to make permanent changes that the landlord won’t allow. Artwork is a very personal thing so it will imprint more of your personality than just painting the walls will. You’ll still have to ask your landlord if you plan on drilling into the walls to hang things but as long as you fill any holes before you leave they shouldn’t have a problem with it.

Coloured Lights

While you might not be able to paint the walls a completely different colour, you can still change the colour of the rooms using lighting. There are plenty of great colour changing LED light bulbs on the market. They used to be pretty expensive but now you can get them for as little as £15 in some places. They come with a range of different colours that you can operate by a simple remote so if you get bored with one colour, you can completely reinvent the room with the touch of a button. Good lighting can also make a small space look much larger than it is.

When you rent a house you won’t be able to make any permanent changes, but don’t let that stop you making it your own.
