Could Your Home Be Healthier? Here’s What To Consider

18th July 2018 by Candace 1 Comment

[AD] When it comes to our home, there is no doubt that we can all be a little healthier or take amore healthier approach. Our homes can get messy and untidy, they can get infested with germs when one member of the family brings an illness home from school or work, and it can be quite difficult to maintain your home with a busy lifestyle. But, often it is our habits or simple changes that can make the most difference. I wanted to share with you some of the things you could consider to help make your home healthier.

The Air In Your Home

One of the first things to think about when it comes to having a healthier home is the air that your breath. When you think about it, it sounds a little obvious, but obviously the air that you breath in when you are in your home can be a little stuffy and not as great as you might imagine. So an air purifier could be the ideal resolve to this problem. It can really help you to breathe easier in your home, and it may even make things like asthma or other breathing related issues a lot easier.

Cross Contamination With Food

In a professional kitchen, you will find that the chefs will have specific preparation areas for different kinds of foods, and also for when they are cooked and raw. They will use specific chopping boards and knives and the whole purpose is to avoid cross contamination. But at home, we probably don’t share the same concern, but yet the threat of cross contamination is still there. This is when using specific boards at home could really help. Did you also know that plastic chopping boards reduce food contamination? Some people at home may still be using wooden chopping boards as well as using the same one for different stages of food preparation and ingredients, but this could raise the threat of cross contamination and food poisoning. Think back to your habits and make some changes.

Avoid Using Chemical Based Cleaning Products

This option might be more of a choice than an actual necessity for a healthier environment in your home but there is some truth to it. Switching the products you use in your home for natural alternatives could help you to create a chemical free and healthier environment. The cleaning products we use daily are laden with chemicals, whereas natural alternatives, plant based options or using DIY methods that include lemon and white wine vinegar can give you the same affects without the use of harsh chemicals.

Dust Could Be Causing Your Issues

It isn’t uncommon to find your home has dust. We may do our level best to try and maintain it, but even cleaning daily will not rid your home of every dust particle that will lay to rest on your furniture. It is even in the air. But having large build ups of dust, be that in areas you may not clean too often such as under the bed and behind the sofa, etc, can cause issues and difficulty with breathing especially when it comes to having already existing concerns like asthma.

Filter Your Tap Water

Drinking water is possibly one of the most healthiest things you can do when it comes to your lifestyle and diet. But, drinking directly from the tap might not be as good as you imagine it to be. Your local water company will filter tap water, but they can’t always rid the water of every toxin and there may be some particles of lead and pesticides to name a few. Filtering your water is a great way to give yourself that extra bit of protection. Keeping a water filter jug in the fridge also means your guaranteed chilled water as well as it being as fresh as it can be.

Avoid Storing Food In Plastic

Finally, there is a huge trend for people to start using less plastic in there day to day lives, and this can mean not just in your purchases but also in your storing of food. Many people tend ot create leftover food they plan to eat another day, but storing in plastic containers could mean that you are allowing more bacteria to penetrate the food than it would if it was being stored in a glass container instead. There are great options out there, and it could be a much healthier way of keeping food stored in the fridge.

I hope that this has given you something to think about when it comes to making your home healthier.

    Hey Candice,
Great tips! 🙂 I agree, we should not store food in plastics nor heat them with plastic; glass containers are the best option. Our home started reducing the use of plastic. It’s one good step to a healthier living 🙂
    Cheers,
    Jessica
