3 Ways You Can Protect The Environment With Your Choices
It is becoming increasingly imperative that we, the human race, start to make the right decisions for our planet. Climate change and all of the consequences of a warming planet are starting to feel incredibly real and dangerous. We need to stop relying on governments to take action because they simply don’t want to make any unpopular choices on our behalf. Instead, it is time for us to start making the right choices for ourselves. No matter how small they might seem, they will have a positive impact on the environment, especially if many of us begin to make changes.
Have a look at three you can start with:
Eat Less Meat
Veganism is a growing movement for a reason. For many, it is not just about their opposition to animal cruelty, but also about the harm meat farming causes to the environment. If we ate less meat, we would have more room to grow crops for the world and would release less harmful methane gas, which is created by cows, into the atmosphere. Eating less meat also reduces energy consumption, which takes a huge toll on the environment. In meat farming, this is so high because of the process of taking the meat (which needs to be kept refrigerated at all times) from the slaughterhouse to the table. We’re not suggesting that you become vegan overnight. Just try and eat less meat to reduce your impact on the planet.
Try To Shop Locally
Your carbon footprint is a major factor that you should take into consideration at all times when trying to make the right choices for the environment. Your individual carbon footprint is all about the amount of carbon that has been released into the atmosphere as a consequence of the choices that you have made. It’s about how far you personally travel but also about how far the products that you purchase have traveled. You can drastically reduce this by ensuring that you shop locally wherever you can. The average car produces 0.88kg of CO2 for every 2 miles driven, so shopping locally means that goods don’t have to travel as far and less CO2 is emitted into the atmosphere. It also has benefits for your local economy.
Choose Certified Products
It can be difficult to know if you are making the right choices when shopping. There are so many products out there – how are we to know the stance of each company when it comes to environmental impact? One thing to look out for is certification. If, for instance, you choose products that have earned the Fair Trade certification, you know that not only is everyone involved in manufacturing the product paid fairly but that steps are also taken to ensure that the environment is protected. Fairtrade is keen to make sure that every product they certify is produced sustainably. This means that production does not take away any of the planet’s natural resources. Wherever you can, look for certifications to make sure you are making the right choices.
