Homemade Apple Pie Recipe

2nd February 2016 by Candace 27 Comments

Apple pie is good.

Great comfort food for this time of the year.

Homemade apple pie is always best.

Warm apple pie, slight crunch to the not overly sweetened filling wrapped in flaky sweet pastry.

Is there anything better?  For me there really isn’t.  I just adore homemade apple pie.

It’s been a goal of mine for a very long time has to make an apple pie just like my Nan used to. They were delicious. Every month whilst at university my parents would visit with a care package. The best thing contained in that care package was one of my Nan’s apple pies and a jar of custard. Many times there would be extras for house mates.  everybody loved my Nan’s pies.

I think I’ve finally perfected her pies after about 35 years of trying!  I’m still using her recipe from her handwritten recipe book that she started writing down her favourite recipes in the 1930’s.  I just love this little book of treasured recipes and love looking through it and finding all the tasty dishes she used to cook for me as a child.

To make the apple pie you will need:

  • 200g/8oz plain flour
  • Pinch of salt
  • 50g/2oz lard
  • 50g/2oz butter
  • Approx 2 tablespoons of cold water
  • 50g/2oz caster sugar
  • 3 large bramley apples
  • An egg yolk

Mix flour and salt together.  Rub in the lard and butter.

Turn onto a floured surface and knead.  Roll out the party to approx 5mm thick and place on to an ovenproof greased and floured plate.

Peel and core the apples and slice.  Now you may not like this bit, place the apples on top of the pastry.  Nothing else.  Just the apples.  I like tangy apple pie and don’t add any sugar to the apples at all.  I think I’m alone with this so you may want to sprinkle a little caster sugar on your apples.

Brush the edge of the pastry with water and place your pastry lid on top.  Crimp the edge with a fork or your finger and thumb.

Brush the beaten egg yolk over the top and sprinkle over the caster sugar.

Cook until golden brown.

Truly scrumptious with warm custard.

Do you have a recipe handed down the generations that is a firm family favourite?

It sounds quite similar to my grandmother’s apple pie recipe. She never wrote it down, but thankfully as a teenager I had the forethought to watch her once and write it all down.

How lovely that you have continued the tradition of baking the recipe your nan used! I love my own mother’s apple pie recipe and adore the scent of it baking as it fills the house with that sweet and spiced aroma of apples and cinnamon! Her recipe is similar but not exactly the same as it is an American style pie. Thanks for sharing this!

Yum. You’re so right – there’s something indescribably delicious about a warm apple dessert with custard. My wife makes a simple apple crumble with sprinklings of brown sugar and cinnamon on the top. This is making my mouth water!

Oh my this looks so good! Thanks for sharing the recipe. There’s something so satisfying about perfecting a family recipe isn’t there? Apple pie was the first thing I ever baked by myself and I still remember how proud I was when my family said they loved it 🙂 Would be great to see a photo of that old family recipe book – i bet there are lots of little handwritten notes

My Nan made a legendary apple pie too! She is in her nineties now and I never thought to ask her how to make it. Maybe I should.

I always like a little sprinkling of cinnamon too 😉

I love apple pie AND I love that you don’t add any sugar to the apples! Even *I* add some sugar to the apples, and I’m known for going very easy on the sugar. I love the pie with custard, and I make that with a lot less sugar than most. It’s lovely that you are still using your grandmother’s recipes; that always makes something special to me.
